Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

TUMMY TUCK SURGERY REPAIRS MUSCLES & REMOVES EXCESS SKIN & FAT TO GIVE YOU A SLIMMER, SMOOTHER STOMACH.

When it’s not possible to achieve a flat stomach through diet and exercise alone, Tummy Tuck surgery can be the right option. The Tummy Tuck is particularly popular with new mums and men or women who have lost a significant amount of weight. They may have excess, loose skin, stretch marks or their tummy muscles may have separated, meaning they feel they need to ‘hold it in’ all the time. Surgery reshapes the area and, by rejoining separated tummy muscles, creates a slimmer, smoother and tighter abdominal area.

KEY TREATMENT AREAS

A Tummy Tuck targets excess skin and fat often left after a huge weight loss or childbirth that diet and exercise alone can’t fix. This procedure also repairs muscles that have been weakened over time.

FULVIO’S ADVICE

Before embarking on cosmetic surgery always do your research and find a reliable surgeon with a local reputation. I would insist on a pre-operative consultation with the surgeon (not a nurse or company representative) weeks before considering surgery to discuss all your options and concerns.

AFTERCARE

You will be asked to mobilise gently for the first few days - in the first week I advise that you could take a small dog for a short walk and lift as much as a small paper bag can carry. Most people feel ready to return to driving and office-type work between one and two weeks. You’ll have as many post-surgery consultations as you need, at no extra cost.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

From the first consultation, I felt assured I was in safe and skilled hands, and was even excited to head to the theatre. I can’t recommend Mr Fulvio Urso-Baiarda, the practice and team enough and would like to thank them for giving me my body confidence back.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Initially, a horizontal incision is made across the base of your stomach. Damaged and stretched abdominal muscles are repaired, repositioned and tightened, before excess skin is removed and you are put back together again. For Tummy Tuck surgery the devil is in the detail - a midline indentation, visible stomach definition and well-hidden scars, particularly around the belly button which might otherwise reveal you have had surgery. Mr Urso-Baiarda will explain how when he meets you. If you have lost a large amount of weight we may recommend a Fleur-De-Lys Abdominoplasty, in which there is also a vertical (midline) incision. In such cases it is more difficult to hide the belly button scar, but it will be offered if in your case it will leave you with a significantly better abdominal contour. This technique may also involve liposuction of the flanks, hips and abdominal wall to the best possible results.

  • After having a Tummy Tuck procedure, you can expect your stomach to be flatter, smaller and firmer. A Tummy Tuck can also be combined with liposuction and other surgical procedures depending on your individual needs.

  • Any procedure carries risks. In the case of a Tummy Tuck, this includes:

    * Permanent scarring which can become thick or lumpy

    * Infection, bleeding or a collection of blood called a haematoma.

    * The need to return to theatre for corrective surgery

    * The development of a collection of tissue fluid called a seroma and the possible need to drain it

    * The asymmetry of the scar, and general risks of surgery such as an infection of the chest or clot formation in the legs or lungs.

    * If liposuction is added there are further small stab scars, more extensive bruising and swelling, a greater risk of wound healing problems and the possibility of contour irregularity, or ridging where fat is removed.

If you would like to discuss any of these risks further then please do get in touch with us.

  • * Analgesia (pain relief) - Ibuprofen and paracetamol can be taken

    * Complete rest will be necessary for 48 hours

    * Surgical skin tapes should be left in place for around 2 months

    * The hospital or surgeon should be contacted if you develop a temperature

    * The hospital or surgeon should also be contacted immediately in rare cases of bleeding or rapid swelling

    * Patients should take care not to over exert themselves in the first few weeks and to keep pressure off the wounds

    * Wounds will be checked and sutures removed normally at 1 week

    * I will see you routinely at 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after surgery, and more frequently if necessary

    * Dressing care nurses may see you more often

    * Swelling reduces after a few weeks
