Breast Capsulectomy
CAPSULECTOMY REMOVES SCARRING RESULTING FROM THE BODY’S REACTION TO BREAST IMPLANTS.
Capsules are scar tissue that can form due to Breast Implants. Although harmless, they can change the shape of the breast implant and weaken its surface, which could lead to splitting. They can also look and feel undesirable. The need for this procedure is becoming less common as breast implant technology improves. Surgery is done on one or both breasts and will depend on the position of the capsule and the impact it is making.

KEY TREATMENT AREAS
Capsules (scar tissue) can cause unpleasant constriction of the breasts, which can feel uncomfortable and may look undesirable. A capsulectomy will remove the capsules that cause this and make the breasts feel and look better.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
Your surgeon will choose where to make the cuts in order to minimise visible scarring. This is usually in the crease beneath your breast. The skin and breast tissue are then lifted and some or all of the capsule is removed. Your surgeon may decide to replace the old implant at the same time. A breast capsulectomy will take 2 - 3 hours to complete. You will be given a general anaesthetic and will need to stay in hospital overnight.

You may experience nausea following the general anaesthetic, along with soreness and swelling of the area, all of which are temporary.
-
Recurrence is likely - all breast implants create some capsular growth, but most do not lead to any problems. A capsulectomy is therefore used to remove “problem” capsule growths only. Sometimes, however, the position of the growth may cause some discomfort or adversely affect the breast shape.
