IPL Treatment
IPL IS A NON-INVASIVE, TAILOR MADE TREATMENT USING A BROAD SPECTRUM OF LIGHT TO TREAT A VARIETY OF SKIN CONCERNS, RESULTING IS MORE TONED, REJUVENATED SKIN.
IPL stands for intense pulsed light, a treatment which uses different wavelengths of light energy to focus on a specific colour or target in the skin such as dark pigment or haemoglobin (redness/ broken blood vessels). When the light is absorbed by the target, the heat causes it to break down into smaller particles and the body naturally eliminates these through its natural processes.
IPL can be used to treat a number of skin concerns at the same time, including vascular lesions such as broken blood vessels, rosacea, as well as various benign pigmented lesions such as freckles, sun damage and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Recent scars, inflammatory acne and stretch marks can be improved with IPL treatment and it is often used for general skin rejuvenation as the skin appears, smoother, brighter and more even toned after treatment.

Key Treatment Areas
IPL can be carried out almost anywhere on the face or body but is most commonly used to treat the face, neck, décolletage and hands, as these are the most commonly affected by sun exposure. IPL treatments generally take 20-30 minutes, depending on which part of your face or body is being treated.
Jenna’s Advice
We usually recommend a certain number of IPL sessions, typically 2 or more, depending on the skin concerns and these can be carried out every 4-6 weeks.
IPL is often described as feeling like a flick of an elastic band and most patients report that they experience the sensation of sun burn for a few hours after treatment.
Aftercare
Recovery time is minimal, but it is common to experience some redness and minor swelling after treatment. Some darkening of pigment or blood vessels can be seen for a few days before it fades away. We advise you treat the skin gently and SPF must be worn daily before and after treatment in order to protect the skin and reduce unwanted side effects.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
During your initial visit, your provider will make sure you’re a good candidate for intense pulsed light therapy. They may even perform a spot test beforehand, and they’ll give you instructions on what items to avoid for up to two weeks before your first IPL appointment. These could include waxing, tanning or sun exposure, peels, and topical creams that contain retinol or glycolic acid. When it’s time for your treatment, your skin will be cleansed and then an ultrasound gel applied. Both you and your provider will wear protective eyewear. The IPL device will be held and moved against your skin, and the light pulses will be emitted with the trigger of a button.
-
The length of treatment depends on the size of the area, but it typically lasts 20 to 30 minutes. After the treatment area has been covered, the gel is removed and sunscreen is sometimes applied.
-
Your skin may be red and swollen for a few hours or the rest of the day, but you should be able to go back to your regular activities or work, using ice packs or a cool washcloth on the treated area if you need to ease the discomfort. You’ll be able to apply moisturizer, sunscreen, and makeup immediately after the treatment.
One to seven days post-treatment, pigmented spots will appear to rise to the surface of your skin—the brown, freckled areas can look like coffee grounds—before fading a few days to a week later. Your skin may feel sunburned and hypersensitive for a couple of days following, so treat it gently until you’re completely healed. Avoid sun exposure and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or greater on the treatment area at all times.
-
The treatment plan for IPL is typically slow and steady, using multiple treatments to achieve full results. Patients often see some improvement in redness within two weeks of their first session, but it may take three to four treatments to see significant results, particularly for more severe dark spots.
