SURGICAL PROCEDURES
Liposuction
LIPOSUCTION IS A SURGICAL PROCEDURE TO REMOVE UNWANTED POCKETS OF FATS TYPICALLY FROM THE ABDOMEN, FLANKS, BACK AND/OR THIGHS.
Liposuction can be used to contour the body into a more desired shape for both men and women. It is not a substitute for weight reduction, but a method for removing localised deposits of fatty tissue that do not respond to diet or exercise. Liposuction may be performed as a primary procedure for body contouring or combined with other surgical techniques such as facelift, abdominoplasty, or thigh lift procedures to tighten loose skin and supporting structures.

KEY TREATMENT AREAS
Liposuction treatments commonly target tummy, love-handles, back, upper arms, thighs or chest. Less common but also very effective treatment areas are beneath the chin, the ankles and the bra-roll area. Liposuction is also used to treat men with excessive breast tissue (gynaecomastia).
FULVIO’S ADVICE
Liposuction works best on people who are a healthy weight and in areas where the skin is relatively tight. If you’re seeking the so-called 'thigh gap', liposuction is often not the best treatment option as the thin skin of that region is prone to becoming loose. For the inner thighs I would recommend CoolSculpting™, a non-surgical fat reduction treatment.
AFTERCARE
After Liposuction it is usual to bruise and swell, but this can be minimised with good compression garments. Arnica tablets before and after surgery may also reduce the extent and duration of bruising. You can usually return to work within a week of surgery but I recommend you hold off vigorous exercise for six weeks.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Under a general anaesthetic, you’ll be injected with adrenaline and a local anaesthetic mix in the fatty area to reduce bleeding and bruising afterwards. Your surgeon will make a small cut and insert a slim tube (cannula) attached to a vacuum pump. The tube will be moved around beneath the skin to loosen the fatty deposits while the vacuum pump removes the excess fat. After surgery, support garments and dressings are worn to control swelling and promote healing.

Alternative forms of management consist of not treating the areas of fatty deposits. Diet and exercise regimens may be of benefit in the overall reduction of excess body fat. Direct removal of excess skin and fatty tissue may be necessary in addition to liposuction in some patients. Risks and potential complications are associated with alternative surgical forms of treatment.

Some swelling and bruising is to be expected following liposuction, whichever method is used. You should be able to resume your normal activities within three to ten days, although it is important to avoid strenuous activity for up to a month following the procedure. The swelling and bruising can take several weeks to completely disappear.

You can expect the results of your liposuction to last for quite a while although your lifestyle, diet and exercise routine will play a part in it all. Over-eating and not exercising will lead to a gradual build up of excess fat again, undoing all the good work the liposuction has done. It is most important to be aware that some, but not all fat can be removed from a particular area in one go, and that it is sometimes necessary to carry out liposuction over two or even more stages to achieve the result you want. You can improve your outcome considerably by weight loss through diet and exercise prior to liposuction - liposuction should not be a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. Considering the images below, a single stage of liposuction can usually move the targeted body area one place to the right.
